The concept of permaculture is gaining significant traction around the world, and it is essential for children to be exposed to this educational opportunity in order to appreciate the importance of sustainable living. SCOPE Zambia is actively promoting permaculture in schools, colleges, and communities to ensure that the education of today’s youth is holistic and comprehensive.
Permaculture is a unique form of living that works with the natural environment to produce long-term sustainable results. It works with the principles of ecology, working with the land and its systems to be self-sustaining and successful for many generations.
For schools, permaculture can be incorporated into the curriculum in many ways. It can be used to teach children the importance of taking a holistic approach to living and working with nature, rather than against it. The students can learn to observe their environment and discover ways to care for it and make it more productive. They can also develop a better understanding of how their actions impact the environment around them, and how to make choices that will ensure the sustainable growth of their community. It also helps them with practical environment design skills and concepts that they can use in their homes and living areas. This is done using Integrated Land Use Design (ILUD) that was coined by Regional Schools and Colleges Permaculture (ReSCOPE).
Incorporating permaculture into the curriculum can have a number of benefits to the pupils, not just in terms of education, but also in terms of their future career choices. The pupils will learn the importance of working with the environment and will gain a new perspective on the value of sustainability. Furthermore, they will be better prepared to contribute to a more sustainable future, as well as understand the importance of ecological stewardship in their lives.
